Music Spotlight: phem

phem is an LA artist, producer and drummer who blends genres and doesn’t like to be boxed into one category. She started out playing drums at a young age before transitioning into songwriting and has since collaborated with G-Eazy, Hayley Kiyoko and MGK to name a few. Her love for art and Tumblr (!!) made her the perfect musician to highlight for our Spotlight series so check out what she had to say. 

Tell us about Vacumhead and what you hope people take away from it.

Vacumhead is a super hero I created to save myself from myself….the idea behind it is to destroy the ego and self judgement. Everyone has a voice inside them that they have to fight in order to stay true to who they are. Everyone can be Vacumhead….keep their mind clear and block out any outward negativity or inner doubt.

For someone who’s never listened to your music before, how would you describe your music/sound to them?

My sound blends genres, it doesn’t adhere to any particular framework…I just make what feels right…but I write from a place of total honesty and transparency and I do it because that’s the challenge I set for myself as an artist.

Dream collaboration(s)?

Tumblr :) I love so many different  artists and sounds so I’d rather not box myself in and make a list. I keep it to myself.

Who and/or what influences your overall aesthetic - from your music to your style to your fashion sense? 

My aesthetic is influenced by any art or music that is raw and pure. When I was younger I grew up going on Tumblr and loved the diary entries and images that seemed secretive & private which I liked.

In your opinion, what’s the most interesting thing about you that people may not know?

I started out playing drums…and then transitioned into songwriting/singing.
